Curriculum
Our Summer Term enquiry question is...
Through our History driver, we will be learning about culture, beliefs and legacy left by the Ancient Mayan civilisation.
Take a look at our knowledge organiser:
We will be reading The Rain Player by David Wisniewki, which is heavily inspired by Mayan mythology and culture.
It tells the story of a young Mayan boy, the protagonist, who must prove his courage and skill in the ancient Mesoamerican game of pok-a-tok to bring rain to his people, who are suffering from a drought.
The story draws on real Mayan beliefs and practices, especially the idea that the gods controlled natural elements like rain and crops, and the belief in human sacrifice or challenges to appease or impress gods.
